They became well known with their work in audio and in particular with compact cassettes. They became a world leader in consumer electronics during the 70s, 80s and 90s by identifying and satisfying the market’s needs. Aiwa products over the years have been relatively low cost but usually represented a good value. Some Aiwa innovations include:
Japan's first cassette tape recorder Japan's first stereo cassette deck The first company to manufacture digital audio tape (DAT) products The first to market a recording headphone stereo A leader in mini audio systems
Sony Corp. had a partial ownership position in Aiwa since the 1960's. On December 1, 2002, Aiwa Company Ltd. was acquired by and became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sony Corporation. In the U.S., the Aiwa brand (Aiwa America, Inc.) was re-launched and re-focused under a newly-formed marketing organization named Aiwa Strategic Accounts Partnership, Inc. (ASAP, Inc.). The new organization's mission is to rebuild the Aiwa brand to exist independently as a vital brand positioned side-by-side with other Sony brands. |
